Facebook From Scratch – A video about signing up for Facebook

Our posts about Facebook are the most popular ones that we create. In view of that, we’re going to do a series of videos about the whole Facebook process, from signing up to securing your privacy. It’s a big task but we’re pretty sure it will interest you. We’ll try to keep the videos short and entertaining. If you have comments or suggestions, please let us know.

We missed a couple of things in the video that we’ll correct next time but, for now, note two things. First, you can’t hide your current profile photo. Second, you can’t hide any  of your background photos, the big ones at the top of your own timeline. If you’re concerned about privacy, make sure that these two things don’t reveal too much about you. We’ll get into these and other fine points of privacy next time.

Facebook’s New Look – March 2014

We knew it was coming, thanks to this:

Is that an Easter bunny? A kitten?

Once again, Facebook has changed its look. This time the change affects both your timeline and your home page. Your timeline is your own page, in case you didn’t know, while the home page is where you see what kinds of things your friends have been up to. Here’s a shot of the new timeline:

Lots of open real estate on the left, cut from this photo, with more on the right.

The center of the page looks much the same but the right side has the news ticker on the top, below the games and apps,  with chat below. You can remove the games tab, thank goodness:

Here are the options that you’ll be able to choose by clicking on the gear icon on the bottom right.

The old news ticker had only one item down on the bottom left. Your home page looks like this:

Ads, lots of them with trending posts at the top right, an attempt to link up with Twitter.

When you turn off the chat and hide the sidebar, things get pretty stark:

Don’t worry, the ads are still there. Not much else though.

There’s also an interesting look while your home page is loading. These look like postal envelopes, don’t they?

The new look seems to be a bit slow in loading.

Only one of our accounts has the new look but, unless you are very observant, you probably won’t notice much difference. To be honest, we think it’s a step backwards. The black sidebar on the left looked OK, to us anyway. It was new, distinctive but maybe needed some work to show more of the ticker and less of the games, etc. Remember it?

We think this looked more modern than the one we have now.

What do you think? There’s not much we can do about any changes that come our way and not everyone has the new look yet anyway. We’re kind of non-committal about it all, basically because there’s no way to change the look yourself. Until that happens, we will just observe and share our thoughts with you.

Facebook Pages – Make sure you get every update

Facebook has been pressing us to boost or promote every post we make on our page. Here is the link to it: Computers Made Simple on Facebook. We don’t post too often, only if we have something to share. The only reason we have the Facebook page is because our posts about Facebook seem to be the most popular. The problem is that Facebook doesn’t share every post we make. They would love for us to promote our Facebook page by paying them money to boost the things that we post. Since Computers Made Simple is primarily a goodwill site, we won’t pay to promote anything. But there is a way for our followers to receive notices about everything we share on our Facebook page. Here’s how to do it:

1. For any Facebook page that you have ‘liked’, either hover over their name in a recent post or go right to their page. What you’re looking for in either case is the word ‘Liked’ with a check mark beside it. Like this:

Photo of Faceook Page Notifications 1
Look for the checked Liked icon.

2. Hover over the word Liked and a menu will pop down. Here it is:

Photo of Faceook Page Notifications 2
On the menu that pops down, click on the words Get Notifications.

3. What you want to see is a check mark beside the words ‘Get Notifications’. This is how it should look:

Make sure Get Notifications is checked.

Now all of the items that our page or any other page you follow will show up on your timeline. Some pages share a lot, some not so much. We’re in the latter category so feel free to like our page. We’ll be glad you did! By the way, if a page posts too many updates simply reverse the procedure to receive fewer notifications.

Thanks for reading!

How to Change a Facebook Video Thumbnail

We don’t upload many videos to Facebook but some of our friends do. Facebook chooses a default thumbnail for your video but here’s how you can choose your own.

1. Find the video on your timeline and click on its title.

2. After the video page loads, click on ‘Edit This Video’. Like this:

Photo of Facebook Edit Video
Find the video on your timeline then click the title to bring up this page. Click Edit Video.

3. The Edit Video page comes up which allows you to tag people in it, change the title, etc. You can also choose the thumbnail that your friends see on their page. Click through the choices, we had 10 available, until you find the one you want. Your choices are limited, probably it depends on how long the video is, but you should be able to find one that suits.

Scroll through the choices for the thumbnail that your friends will see.

4. Don’t forget to click ‘Save’ before you exit the page.

That’s it! It seems simple now but it’s not exactly intuitive, is it? If you have problems with anything else on Facebook, let us know.
