Weixan/WeChat – Shake your way to new friends

EDIT: We’ve been in touch with WeChat on Twitter. They’ve sent us a couple of Direct Messages there. Here’s what they said:

“Hi Brian. Thx for helping us answer users’ questions! I can see that ur site is a super useful resource! We really appreciate it!”

All well and good but how about some help! Here’s the next one:

“We read through some of the comments & submitted these issues to the team. We’ll get back to you as soon as I hear back….”

The last one was back on September 27th, 2013. Still waiting. We’ll post when we hear from them.

Last week, we wrote about WeChat. Here is the post: WeChat/Weixin . Here is the link to WeChat at the Apple Store. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wechat!/id414478124?mt=8 It’s available in the Android app store, as well.

Sometimes it seems that the only innovations in social networking are coming out of China. Honestly, that’s not all that hard to figure out, seeing as how there are over a billion people there and almost half of them use the Internet. Of those users, about 400 million access the Internet using the various mobile devices available, many of which are Smartphones.

Add the fact that Chinese Internet users are very sociable, probably more so than North Americans, and you’ve got a perfect wave forming for a company like Tencent (http://www.tencent.com/en-us/index.shtml). Enter Weixin or WeChat. Tencent already has a huge market with QQ and its own version of Weibo but now, with WeChat, they have come up with a purely mobile chat application that is, to us anyway, stunning.

Read our previous post then come back and find out how to meet new people using WeChat. Take your time, we’ll wait.

OK! Here we go. There are three completely different ways to look for other WeChat users. Of course, you can plunk in your other social media passwords and find out which friends already use WeChat or you can invite them to start using it, but here we’re talking about meeting completely new people.

1. The first way is to simply ‘Look Around’. If your mobile device has a GPS monitor, you’ll be able to search out WeChat users who live in your area. In my case, I found users within 900 meters of my home. To me, that’s kind of like standing on your porch and shouting, “Is there anybody out there?” Of course, the local users are all Chinese, except for me that is. Most early adopters of WeChat are overwhelmingly Chinese but, theoretically, that will change.

Once you find a WeChat user nearby, you can simply say, “Hi”. You can also tune the Look Around feature to show only males, only females or both. Personally, I think this feature is pretty cool but I can also see how it might seem creepy to some of you. If it does, you can easily delete the Look Around plug-in. It is part of the default set of plug-ins and is easily removed.

2. Instead of looking around for other WeChat users, you can shake your way to new relationships using the Shake plug-in. Choose the option from the screen and simply give your mobile phone a shake. WeChat looks around for other users who are shaking their devices at the same time and gives you the option to say hi to them. This plug-in is more proactive than the Look Around feature since you already know that the person shaking their phone is looking to make contact with someone. Say hi and see how it goes. You can always shake again if things turn sour. Remember, again, that virtually every user you contact will be Chinese. If you know anything about China and the Chinese people, you will know that almost everyone wants to learn English but many Chinese already have a rudimentary knowledge of it.  Many Chinese speak and write better English than some of your friends and neighbors, too.

TIP: If you meet someone you like and the English thing isn’t getting you anywhere, you can download QQ International. We’ll do another post on it but, for now, we’ll simply say that you can chat with someone who only knows Chinese even if you only know English. There is a wonderful translation app built into the International version which has opened up the world to China and, of course, China to the world.

3. The last way to meet new friends is to simply cast a bottle out into the ocean. Of course, this is a virtual bottle but it works the same way as a real bottle with a message in it. Type in your note or use a voice message and then toss your bottle into the ocean of WeChat users. WeChat will notify you when someone replies. Just now, I tossed a bottle out and almost instantly got three replies. One was a female exchange student in Denmark, another was a man who left me a voice message and the third was also a guy who just said, ‘Hello”. In the span of five minutes, I’ve got three new people to share things with. Cool!

WeChat isn’t for everyone. At this point, you have to have a keen interest in China and the Chinese people. You also have to be patient and be able to understand that not everyone in the world speaks perfect English. Once you’re over those hurdles, WeChat is loads of fun. Additionally, if you wait a year or so, WeChat will be flooded with millions of other users. At this point, it supports Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Portuguese, plus English and Chinese. (If you know social networking, you’ll see the importance of having WeChat available in Portuguese. Orkut, the Google version of Facebook, is extremely popular in Brazil.)

Questions, comments, links are all welcome. Thanks for reading!

    1. There are two types of blocking. Once type blocks users completely, the other blocks contacts from seeing your Moments photos. Additionally, the person may still be on your contact list but you can’t message them, better that you delete them yourself. Good luck.

    1. When you choose a photo to share on Moments, on the screen where you type in the words you want to go with the photo, there is the word Mention just below ‘Share to’. Press Mention and choose one or more friends from your contact list. Let us know if you have a problem with this.

  1. #*#*#*#*#*Dear Expert,
Two days back i was send “sex chat” request in greeting box, and i got plenty of replies, but now nobody is replying to my greeting even if send just as “Hi”. I am talking of shake feature. Its my humble request you to please help me out in this issue. Hope u will fullfil the same.
    THANKING YOU.

    1. Honestly, we’re surprised that it worked the first time. There is a chance that WeChat blocked or blacklisted you. That would happen if someone complained. If you now have a simple ‘Hi’ (as opposed to your other greeting), make sure your photos are appropriate for a public app such as WeChat. If the photos are ‘normal’ (not R rated) and your message is simply ‘Hi’, there is nothing else we can do to help. Why not create a new account and see if you get any responses from it? Good luck.

  2. hi. how can i delete/block a person dat i hve been added to my acc?i added this person b4 knowing him well after shaking…then only find out he is so so annoying..hahaa help me

    1. Go to your contact list, then press on the person that you want to block. When their profile comes up, look for three dots up on the top right and press them. Then choose ‘Block’. Good luck! Let us know if you have a problem. Thanks for commenting.

  3. Hi. If the option find me by phone or contact list in privacy is disabled. Does that mean that a friend that has my phone number cant see me in their wechat contact list?? My problem is that i dont want a certain person who has my phone number to see that im on we chat, will disabling the find me by phone or contact list help? Its real important plz help. Thnxs 🙂

    1. If ‘find my by phone’ is turned off, no one can find you using your phone number. We would also suggest that you turn off ‘find me by WeChat ID’, too. You can still add contacts but no one can find your ID. That way, if someone gives this person your ID, they will still not be able to find you. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting.

  4. if I mentioned on my friend’s moment, can I remove that mentiion by my self.?? Then, is it possible for my friend to remove that mention.??
    Thanks 😉

    1. Wow, this is like tagging Facebook, isn’t it? The big difference is that you cannot remove the mention, nor can your friend. They would have to delete the whole moment, there is no way we can find to remove the mention. Sorry! Thanks for commenting.

    1. You can only add them if they reply to you. If they don’t reply, you’re out of luck. If you go to Settings then Privacy, you can turn on the ‘Reply and Add Friend’ settings. If that is turned on and someone contacts you, as soon as you reply, the person will be added to your contact list. If you send a message to a stranger, they have to accept your invitation to be friends. If they don’t, there is nothing you can do. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting.

    1. They must accept your as a friend before you can add them. You can send messages back and forth but they have to say YES to you being a contact. We think that this is the answer to your problem but, of course, we are not positive. We do not have anything to do with WeChat except writing the posts that describe the app.

  5. if i deleted my friend on my friend list, so i cant search that friend again, i miss him, and i want him back, can you please tell me, what can i do, him name is (Deleted by us) and i dont know him id, please help me, i want him back, can you tell me, what him id :3 please please i want my best friend back 🙁

  6. hey…agr me kissi ko greeting snd krti hoon n if he accept den mera number unke pas chala jyga jinhe me greeting bhjungi…
    plzzz rply its urgnt..

      1. She asks : If I have send a gretting to someone stranger and he replies it. Does my mobile number saves on his phone?? Please reply, it’s urgent…

P.S: I’m actually also wondering about it..Thanks in advance for your reply!:)

  7. Hi, just have a question if someone blocked me will they still show on my contacts?

if i remove the app can i still receive messages if ever i have added my phone number? thanks

    1. If someone blocks you, they won’t show up in your contacts. It’s as if you don’t exist on WeChat. If you remove the app, you won’t get any messages from your WeChat contacts. Your phone number only links you to your WeChat account, if you opted to do that. You need the app to receive messages.
      Thanks for commenting!

  8. if i block someone, will that person come to know about it in anyway or will he/she get any notification that i have blocked them??
    Plz help.

    1. No, they will now know that you blocked them until they send you a message. At that point they will get a ‘message not received’ notice. At that point they may realize that they are blocked. What do you want to do? Stop someone from seeing your Moments? You can do that easily. Go to Contacts then to the person you want to hide your Moments from, then to the three dots up on the top right. Choose to hide your Moments there. If you don’t want the person to know you blocked them, just ignore them. Don’t respond to their messages. You can also hide their Moments using the same technique we described. There are two choices on that menu: hide yours or hide theirs. Let us know if this didn’t help, OK?
      Thanks for commenting!

  9. Hi! How to send friend request in Wechat?i am getting greeting messages but not able to add them as friend! Please help

    1. There is a setting for that. Go to your Privacy settings then look for ‘Reply and Add Friend’. Turn that to the On. Now, when someone sends you a message, all you have to do is reply to them and they will be added to your contact list. If you don’t respond (answer), they will not be added. Let us know if this needs more explanation.
      Thanks for commenting!

  10. I could use wechat of feature “look around” but seems like the greeting message could not deliver to the person. I did try to use different devices under different username, and try to send greeting to each other, none of them could receive the sent message. Does anyone experience that? help

    1. WeChat will tell you if the message didn’t go though. Is it because the other people are not replying? Sending a message is one thing that WeChat does quite well. There is a notice if the message doesn’t go through. On the other hand, if the other person doesn’t feel like answering, that doesn’t mean they didn’t get the message. This may depend on where you are, what data service you are using, etc. You’ve tried everything that we would suggest. If you have two devices and two profiles, try sending a message to yourself and see what happens. Let us know what you find out.
      Thanks for commenting!

      1. I did try to use two different devices with different Wechat ID (phone number) and send the greeting messages to each other. But none of side could receive the message at all. (note: one of the side use mobile network, and the other side use wifi).
        Any thought?

        1. That’s a mystery. We don’t think it’s WeChat, however. We think it’s a combination of your devices or your network, something like that. WeChat is really not much different from SMS. This may have something to do with your carrier, we’re not sure. Sorry we couldn’t help!
          Thanks for commenting.

  11. Helloo
I want to use wechat but there is some one on my phone contact I dont want him to know That am USING WECHAT I try to block but he is already not on my wechat friend am scare to use wechat and let him see me what can I do can you give me the solutions for that pls

    1. You do not have to link WeChat with your phone contacts unless you want to do that. You have to choose to do that, it does not happen automatically. Find out his WeChat ID or name and block him. You know how to block someone, right? If not, let us know and we can explain it to you. Once you block him, he cannot see you or see your moments. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting!

  12. Every time I shake I get paired with Chinese people who supposedly live 10-20km away from me. I’m nowhere near China what the hell is going on???

    1. Are you saying that the people actually live in China and Shake and/or your GPS is wrong or are you saying that there really are Chinese people near you and that upsets you? If the people you are paired up are really in China, your GPS and maybe your device are faulty. If they live in your area, and that’s easy to learn, just say hi to them. What’s wrong with that? If you only want people of a certain type, WeChat is the wrong app for you. WeChat is a Chinese product that you use for free. Naturally, more Chinese use it than any other group. If that doesn’t fit with your view of the world, move on to another app and leave WeChat to less xenophobic people like us! Thanks for commenting.

      1. I think you are over-reacting to a very legitimate question, and I did not sense any xenophobic content in the original question, especially that I have had the same issue on three different smartphones with functioning GPS. The issue the original poster refers to happens regularly in Shake mode, but not in Looking Around (which is always accurate in my experience). I have checked my devices and can confirm that the GPS location is enabled and functioning very well. At least once a day while in Shake mode, users appear a few kilometres away while they are in reality thousands of kilometres away. This is a technical question that has nothing to do with the nationality of the people found on Shake. So don’t look for xenophoby when it is not there please!!!

        1. You may be right but we’ll stick with our original response. Yes, it was a legitimate question but, at least in our opinion, the tone of it indicated that ‘Chinese people’ were not what the person was looking for. Had the reader simply said ‘people who I know are not within 10-20 KM of me’, and we would wonder how the reader knew that, then we’d consider it a non-xenophobic question. We would ask you, how do you know that the people who Shake at the same time as you are really thousands of kilometres away? They could be users who are travelling, or users who have moved but haven’t changed their original location. We have seen users in different countries use completely false locations for their original setup information so, again, how do you know where these people really are? We use WeChat on two different platforms, iOS and Android. While we haven’t grilled every contact we’ve met through Shake, we’re fairly certain that they are where Shake says they are. If someone is close, we simply ask them if they are where Shake says they are. So far, the answers have been 100% positive.
While your devices may be working fine, what’s to say that the co-Shaker’s device is functioning perfectly? We would love to find out how much influence your data supplier has over your GPS position. That applies to you and to your co-Shaker.
Look, if you’re using Shake on a daily/hourly basis, and it doesn’t seem to be 100% accurate, what’s the loss? You can’t really ask for your money back, right? Take it for what it is, a fun way to interact with other people, usually people who may not speak the same language as you but are exactly the same as you in just about every other way.
Lastly, we didn’t create WeChat. We answer questions about it out of a sense of duty for the post we wrote. WeChat doesn’t really have a support group, not yet anyway, and that may be because of language difficulties. Then again, it’s grown so fast, why would they need to provide support. It is, after all, free.
Thanks for opening another discussion. It will be interesting to see if other readers agree with you. We’ll put it out there in a separate post.

          1. OP here – Thanks for your replies and discussion. No offence was intended in my original question and if I was constantly being paired up with Turkish people, I would say that – I was curious because this app is Chinese that possibly there is a bot or something of that sort which imitates location with a fake profile? During the day I usually get paired up with a variety of people across the world, Mexico to the UK and even China, but during early morning and at night I ONLY get paired with people from China.
Not a problem – but as mentioned in the first post, their location is up to 20km away (which is simply not true)

Thanks Philippe for understanding and trying to answer. My phone is not faulty, nor is my gps inaccurate.

            Any more suggestions?

            Thanks

          2. OK good, fair points. We would ask you how you know they are not 20K away? Do you ask them? For instance, we have a contact from Look Around whose profile says she is in Beijing but she is in Toronto right now. Maybe she is travelling or maybe she is a student here. We really can’t figure out how you know for sure they are not where WeChat says they are. As time goes by, we’ve been getting more contacts from countries other than China, Iran for instance. If you’re sure, then there is a glitch of some kind but we haven’t noticed it yet. We’ve been reading about GPS spoofing lately, though. (Joking).
            Again, thanks for commenting!

          3. Update: We’ve noticed that you can’t go by what Shake tells you as far as the country goes. We just chatted with someone we thought was in Paris but they were in the Philippines. Although it says Paris, the KM distance was wrong. We mean it was right for the Philippines but not for Paris. It seems a user can spoof the country name but not the GPS. We will keep trying to duplicate the location error. Hopefully we will be able to comment on it further.

          4. i m 100% agree with the complain..that is happening wid me too..it seems tat someone has hacked ur mobile…main difficulty is these chinese people dont know english..unless i may nt hv any issue..plz tackle out d problem n keep us inform..from ur previous suggestions it seems tat u r a very gud advisor…bt dis is a major issue…plz try to find out d prblm. all d best

          5. In our experience, most Chinese can use a little to a lot of English. As with many other people however, they may pretend not to be able to understand someone. There is another anonymous chat app coming out and we’ll do a post about it when it does. The success of WeChat seems to have inspired other app makers to develop similar types of applications.
Thanks for your nice comments and good luck with the problem. Thanks for commenting, too.

          6. thanks to your reply…but you mention that someone has hacked my wechat account.how can i solve this issue…i don’t want to leave this app because i like this app … kindly reply me to fix this problem…

          7. Usually a helper app has hijacked WeChat. If you reset your phone to its default settings then reinstall WeChat by itself, it should work fine. Don’t install anything that says it will help you find contacts, just install WeChat and get it from the proper app store for your device. Good luck!

    2. Since I last posted my response, I’ve been matched with the same 20 or so ‘people’ over and over. I’m almost certain it’s a bot. I’m going to backup my chats and reinstall and hope for the best…

      1. WeChat is selling advertising but we’re not sure how that is going to work. What you are seeing might be something from the early stages of development. We assume they will use bots, the same way that corporate accounts use Twitter. Hopefully all of this will be an ‘opt-in’ scenario. I’d hate to think that bots are out there adding people as ‘friends’. Yesterday, we ran into one similar situation but we paused shaking and things went back to normal. When you think about it, this Shake thing must be difficult to manage, more so now that WeChat is so popular. There’s bound to be errors and glitches. It’s best to take it as it is, a free, fun way to meet people. We can’t ask more than that.

    3. Hi, Even I faced the same problem many a times!
I can understand four or five Chinese people staying within 100m.. But it is not practically possible for atleast 30-40 Chinese people to be withing 100m range when I know the area and people living in the area I live. And this issue I have observed only after a certain number of shakes.. Otherwise the shake feature works fine.
Is there any threshold limit for the Shake feature???
I feel it does have..Once the threshold limit crosses, it behaves weird and does not list the people shaking the phones correctly.

      Thanks for your patience!!!

      1. We would assume then that there is a limit to the number of shakes you can perform within a certain time limit. WeChat is free and the Shake function uses their resources. If you shake and shake endlessly, that’s not really fair to other users. This is all meant for fun, nothing more. Shake, wait five minutes, shake again, try that. We don’t know for sure that this is the answer but it’s a good guess.
        Thanks for commenting.

        1. Same problem for me, i am Italian and i live in Taiwan and i used wechat for 1 year with no problems but it has been 1 week that i have problem with the shake mode, after a very few shakes people that don’t live near here pop up 20 kms away (the same 20 guys using pics in loop and keeping changing name and status, sometimes with ecplocit meanings) i tried to contact them in order to block them coz the shake mode now is useless but no answer.

          1. All we can suggest is that you’ve added some software that is interfering with WeChat or that is controlling it somehow. When you say ‘explicit meanings’, we can only assume that another app that you’re installed has hijacked WeChat. As WeChat gets more and more popular, many unscrupulous companies will try to get their spam ads in front of users, no different than popups that appear when you are surfing the Internet. We use WeChat on two platforms, iOS and Android. Our Shake results are the same on each one, no explicit comments at all. Start from scratch, that’s all we can suggest. Have you installed any ‘helper’ apps on WeChat? We see that there are many additions to WeChat. We suspect that one of them is causing your problem. Let us know.
            Thanks for commenting.

          2. I m having similar problem as reported by other user that shake option in wechat show people of only specific country(nothing offensive about that)but this feature worked well for few month now suddenly people from other country are being shown in around 15-20 km radius. Can someone please give solution for the issue.

            Thanks in advance

        2. Dear sir
I have got the same problem with shake, it is almost 48 hours that I got just some faked users from china around and I know that this happened because I used shake frequently. I asked you before to fix the problem then you advised me to change my username, I did it but still the problem exists. Is there another solution?
          thanks

          1. The only other solution might be to take a break. The problem seems to crop up when users Shake for too long. Give it a break and see if that fixes your problem. Just so you know, we are not connected to WeChat in any way. Good luck and thanks for commenting.

  13. Yes I did text “hello” into the friend request space inside but until today still the same unable to send friend request. I was wondering the person have block me or black list me ?

    1. It does look like the person blocked you, unfortunately. They may have changed their privacy settings to turn off friend requests, too. We’d say let it go and find someone else, there are lots of new people out there. Maybe they will contact you, you never know. Good luck!

    1. Do you mean Zimbabwe? The only thing we see that isn’t supported is importing contacts since the Zimbabwe country code is not there. Everything else should work. Let us know.
      Thanks for commenting!

  14. Hi,

I was chatting with a unknown person for sometime. And suddenly I get a message ‘xxx has requested friend verification. Please send a friend request to chat.”

When I click on the ‘Send a friend request’ active link in blue, Friend Request, Send a friend request pop up appears with a text field whose character limit is 16.

What should I enter in this text field?

I tried entering my web chat id, verification code, the other persons name.. But nothing worked.

Please tell me how to proceed.
Handset I use is HTC Desire C (Android)

    1. Just type in something like ‘Hello! It’s Paul’ but use your name, of course. We’ve been getting that sometimes too so it may be a glitch or it may be that the person doesn’t recognize you. Enter hello and your name and press Send. Let us know if this doesn’t work.
      Thanks for commenting!

      1. Hi Brian,

Yes, I did put in some text.. But, I get a message stating ‘Unable to send the request’.
        What does this message mean?

        1. The only thing we can suggest, other than not being connected to wireless or your data signal, is that the person has blocked you. If we find another solution, we’ll let you know. Good luck!

          1. m also facing the same problem..”xxx has requested friend verification. please send a friend request to chat”. please fix this error for me.

          2. There’s nothing to fix. Your contact has deleted you and you have to add them back if you want to chat with them. If you keep getting the messages, your friend is refusing to add you again. We don’t think there is an error. This is normal. Good luck and thanks for commenting.

  15. Hi regarding about wechat I have a problem is starting chatting with the person few hours later continue wanted to chat but it pop out says that person has requested friends verification please send a friends request for chat but when key in the send request and is come out unable to send friends request , wanted to know what happen ? And is that person block me or black list me ?

    1. Did you put any text in the friend request space? If you did and tried to send it, it should. It won’t send unless you put something like ‘Hello!’ in the text space. If there is a real WeChat warning that it can’t be sent, then the person really did block you.
      Thanks for commenting!

  16. sir, my greetings are successfully sended by me but it is not recieved by the other users whom iam sending the greetings please help me for solving this problem..

    1. That means that the person has blocked you. Sorry! There could also be a problem with the person’s carrier or their phone is full of messages and can’t take any more but this usually means you’re blocked.
      Thanks for commenting!

  17. I think someone blocked me on my drift bottle cause i get mad when someone asked me for video sex. Now no one is replying with my bottle. What to do?

    1. Bottles are hit and miss, probably the least-used feature of WeChat. Send another few and see what happens. You have to give it time. Drift bottle is not instantaneous.
      Thanks for commenting!

  18. Please help there’s no “SHAKE” option on my BlackBerry Z10. Should I delete and reinstall Wechat or what do I do.

    1. Shake is not available for the Blackberry platform, not yet anyway. Sorry! Give it some time and it may become available in the future.
      Thanks for commenting!

  19. sir, how much shake we can do in a day? ism tired to shake, after some shake,no one friends can reply me… just shake and shake but no reply wat i do ? pleas reply me

    1. Shake is like a lottery. Sometimes you win, most often you lose. There’s nothing you can do except keep trying or give up. Maybe you should try different approaches, different words. Maybe you should change your Memories photos or your cover image, something like that. You’re obviously doing something wrong or people are getting the wrong impression of you. Time to change your strategy.
      Thanks for commenting!

  20. I am able to send messages to a person. But the person is not replying from the past 2 days.Am I blocked.how to know if I am blocked.or if the person is receiving the messages? ?

    1. If your message doesn’t get through, WeChat will notify you. If you don’t get a notice from WeChat about your messages, then the person has not blocked you. Blocking and ignoring you are two different things, right? Maybe the person is busy, doesn’t want to reply or is unable to reply. Wait for a while. If nothing changes, move on to someone else.
      Thanks for commenting!

  21. How do I send friend requests to the people I find through shake? I didn’t find any option on their profile pages. help please!

    1. After you shake, press on the person that comes up and then press Send Greeting. The “Send Greeting” is not in the same window as the fist shaking the device. It’s on the page that comes up when you press profile of the person that comes up. Good luck!

    1. Go to Settings (the gear icon), then Privacy, then Blocked List then choose the person you want to unblock. Once their profile is showing. there will the three dots up on the top right. Press them and choose Unblock. Good luck!

  22. If some one puts you on reject message then after some days if he sends message but he puts ur message on rejection mode then how to send him message? or how can send him mesage?

    1. If he is sending you messages then rejecting yours, there is nothing you can do. Your best solution is to block him. That way, he won’t be able to bother you again. WeChat is all about two-way conversation, not one-way. Block him and move on, that’s our opinion. Good luck!

  23. My country is not listed on the menu of countries for registration and for linking phone book.. Any reason for this or how can I manually add it. Country code is 263, Zimbabwe

    1. That’s a good question. There doesn’t seem to be a way to manually add the country code, unfortunately. There doesn’t seem to be a way around this, not immediately anyway. Hopefully WeChat will come up with more country codes soon.

    1. What platform (device) are you using? Check the WeChat site to see if those two features are supported on your device. You could try deleting the app and reinstalling it. Let us know what device you are using and we’ll check it out. You know that you have to have GPS enabled, right? Make sure your device has GPS. If it doesn’t, you’re out of luck.

        1. Go to your phone settings and turn on Location Services, or whatever it’s called on your platform. You can’t do that inside of WeChat, only from your phone’s settings. Good luck!

  24. When I sent a message to friend of mine I get this reply”your message sent successfully but rejected by receiver” am l blocked?

    1. Unfortunately, yes, you are blocked. The only other explanation is that the person’s carrier, as in their data/phone supplier, rejected the message. We think you’re blocked, however. Thanks for commenting!

      1. 2 questions. first when using shake on my mobile phone, in the begining it would pick up 10 plus people at a time(most form china) then it just started pulling one at a time. If I leave my home and drive somewhere, it picks up 10 plus again. Any ideas how to kewep pulling 10 plus people? Its a pain to do one at a time. ALSO i downloaded wechat for pc and the shake feature doesnt work on it, any suggestions? thx

        1. We usually only get one person on Shake, never 10. Depending on the time you shake, there might be quite a few or very few people shaking in other parts of the world. WeChat originated in China so you would naturally get more Chinese than any other groups, although we get more Thai than anything else. That part of the world is 12 hours ahead of us, your time offset may be different. As for the shake on a PC, how are you doing to shake your PC? We’re not sure how Shake works, exactly, but you don’t want to go around shaking any PC, laptop or not, unless it has an SSD in it. Shake a laptop with a normal HD in it and you’re asking to lose your data. We’ll try it and see if we can figure it out but, for now, stick to shaking your mobile device.

        1. It’s a fairly complicated route but here we go. Get to your Settings screen. On the new update for iOS, click on the Me button then to settings. On any other version, look for the gear icon on the lower right. In Settings, press Privacy. Scroll down and look for Blocked List. Once you get the list of people you have blocked, scroll down until you find your friend. Press the name and wait for the profile to come up on your screen. Up on the top right there should be three dots. Press them and choose Unblock. At that point, the person is Unblocked by they are not your friend yet. Press Add to add them back on your contact list. Good luck! Let us know if you have a problem with this.

  25. hi, is wechat available for blackberry q10 and z10 ? if yes, does it have all the features like video, voice calls and chatrooms and lookaround, driftbottle etc ?
    thanks.

    1. WeChat is available for OS/5 through OS/7. Shake and Look Around are available but we’re not sure about the other features. Try it and let us know. The current version is 2.5.
      Thanks for commenting!

      1. i need to know if it has all features before i buy bbq10 bbz10 .it runs on OS10. so can u recheck with someone who has bb10 and let me knw ?

        1. We’re quite sure that Mr. Google can help you a lot more than we can. We review software, we don’t create it. Check out the WeChat website for details on BB features.

  26. Since last couple of hours, the shake function is only showing me people within 12 miles of me and nothing else. These are the same people I have seen now 100s of times. What is going on ?? Is it broken or some sort of shake limit reached ?

    1. We’ve noticed that too. We’ve never had results from anywhere near us but now it’s a common occurrence. As far as we know, there is nothing you can do about it. Shake is hit and miss. It’s like a game more than anything. We’ve never had much luck with it, to be honest. Tune your search for just girls or just guys. Maybe that will change your luck.

        1. Go to Look Around then press the gear icon up on the top right. Set this to ‘View Females Only’ and the settings will hold for Shake, at least they do for us. Good luck!

  27. i use nokia mobile which is symbian. and i dont see nearby chatrooms in my mobile wechat but see in android samsung. also my nokia wechat version is 4.2 but the android is 4.5.1 . when can symbian java users be able to access chatroom ? also on nokia wechat there is no option for videocall. but its for android and other OS. this sucks

    1. That feature is only available for Android and iOS, unfortunately. Each platform has its limitations. Hopefully WeChat will upgrade the Symbian version so you can access the group chat feature.

  28. hi..iam using nokia e71…we chat is working fine..but i cant get to know that where do i find the replies from lookaround and the shake feature???
it shows that the message is sent…but i cant figure out where to find the replies!!!

    1. The replies show up in the Look Around or Shake pages then you have the option to add the person or send a reply to their reply. Once you do that, they appear on your contact list and it tells you that they are from LA or Shake. Not everyone replies, remember that. We get some responses but certainly not 100%.

    1. What error does it give you? Are you simply not finding anyone or does WeChat tell you that it’s not working? We don’t know the Swipe at all, we think it’s only in India but we aren’t sure. Aside from rebooting the device or uninstalling then reinstalling WeChat, there isn’t much else to suggest. Sorry!

    1. If they know you had photos in your Moments before, yes. Once you blacklist them, they can’t see anything so if you had photos at one time, then they won’t be able to see them. They will know. Better to unfriend them and clock them. Thanks for commenting!

      1. While I blacklist people on moment, I still can see their moment update(which is not suppose to be), can they see mine too? Does the blacklist function on moment is not working?

        1. You have blacklisted them. They have not blacklisted you, it seems. That only works one way, not two. No, they can’t see yours but they have not stopped you from seeing theirs.
          Thanks for commenting!

  29. I have a problem with shake no body answered me am I blocked ? If yes how I know that and how it resolved please reply .thanks

    1. Maybe no one is shaking at the same time that you are shaking. Maybe Shake is blocked in your country. There are several reasons why you don’t get answers. As long as you are not spamming people who you meet, then we would suggest turning your phone off then on to see if that changes things. Stand beside a friend and both shake your phones at the same time to see what happens. We don’t think you are blocked unless you use Shake again and again and again.

  30. Hi, a friend added me recently and I can’t see any of her posts or her album, she doesn’t know why either, can u help? I know she didn’t block me, thanks!

    1. You can’t be sure that she didn’t block you, can you? It sure seems that she has blocked you. Maybe you have accidentally blocked her. Go to Settings then Privacy then to Moments then to Hidden Friends. Make sure she isn’t on your list of people under Hidden Friends.

  31. If i blacklist someone to c my moment ,if i unblack list them will.they saw.my moment when a times i .black list them ?
Somemore is ….all my fren can c who i mentioned in my moment picture even they don noe each other ?

I try to set my moment in privacy ,them want to metion fren… it cannot work…..so i set a group for at particular fren. …so next time only tat group .of fren can read my moment ….. if a day i change my moment back to .public ,will all fren saw my moment tat i send to particularly group ?

Wechat was great apps….fren at there always help me in emotion period …. but a lot of thing i decide not reveals to my kin… ^.^

    1. 1. Anyone can see your last 10 moments. If you blacklist someone, then unblacklist them, we think they will be able to see ALL of your Moments. Don’t take a chance with that. 2. Anyone who is also friends with the person you mention in a picture can see the comment. As WeChat says: “Your friends will only see comments from those users who are also their friends.” 3. If you set a photo to Private, only you can see it. If you send the photo to a friend then mark it as Private, only you and your friend will see it. Once you change it back to public, everyone can see it. We’d advise you to be careful and don’t take a chance on these public/private settings. If you send a photo to someone in chat, it is private. Only you and your friend can see it.
Yes, we love WeChat too. It’s a great app.

  32. how can i add my exact location on we chat

because it is showing some specific cites my location is not there

    1. Your GPS tells WeChat what your location is. If you can’t find people on Look Around or Shake, that means that no one in your city is using WeChat. WeChat knows where YOU are through your GPS. If can only find other WeChat users through GPS. If WeChat tells you that you are in the wrong city, it’s your GPS, not WeChat. Use another device or have a friend check it. There is a slim chance that WeChat is not allowed in your country. It may be banned. Just a guess but that might be possible.

  33. If I deleted someone from my contact list.he is able to see my moments updates up to 10.will he able to see that more than 10?

    1. That’s a good question. We would say that he wouldn’t be able to see any more than 10. Even strangers can see your 10 most recent Moments. Now, we just discovered a ‘Black List’ that we didn’t know existed. Look for it under Settings, then Privacy then Moments. Here’s our situation. We have blocked some people, they are on our Block list, of course, and can’t see or interact with us in any way. We have also deleted two contacts. In Privacy under Moments we have those two contacts on our Black List. That would seem to mean that, since we have deleted those two people but haven’t blocked them, WeChat hides our moments from them. We can’t guarantee that this works but we think that’s the way it does. If you have a friend with WeChat, play around with those settings and see what happens. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting!

    1. Yes. Anyone on WeChat, unless you’ve blocked them, can see up to 10 of your Moments. You have to wait until he contacts you again before you can block him. You could also add him, wait till he says yes, then block him. Good luck!
