Weixan/WeChat – Shake your way to new friends

EDIT: We’ve been in touch with WeChat on Twitter. They’ve sent us a couple of Direct Messages there. Here’s what they said:

“Hi Brian. Thx for helping us answer users’ questions! I can see that ur site is a super useful resource! We really appreciate it!”

All well and good but how about some help! Here’s the next one:

“We read through some of the comments & submitted these issues to the team. We’ll get back to you as soon as I hear back….”

The last one was back on September 27th, 2013. Still waiting. We’ll post when we hear from them.

Last week, we wrote about WeChat. Here is the post: WeChat/Weixin . Here is the link to WeChat at the Apple Store. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wechat!/id414478124?mt=8 It’s available in the Android app store, as well.

Sometimes it seems that the only innovations in social networking are coming out of China. Honestly, that’s not all that hard to figure out, seeing as how there are over a billion people there and almost half of them use the Internet. Of those users, about 400 million access the Internet using the various mobile devices available, many of which are Smartphones.

Add the fact that Chinese Internet users are very sociable, probably more so than North Americans, and you’ve got a perfect wave forming for a company like Tencent (http://www.tencent.com/en-us/index.shtml). Enter Weixin or WeChat. Tencent already has a huge market with QQ and its own version of Weibo but now, with WeChat, they have come up with a purely mobile chat application that is, to us anyway, stunning.

Read our previous post then come back and find out how to meet new people using WeChat. Take your time, we’ll wait.

OK! Here we go. There are three completely different ways to look for other WeChat users. Of course, you can plunk in your other social media passwords and find out which friends already use WeChat or you can invite them to start using it, but here we’re talking about meeting completely new people.

1. The first way is to simply ‘Look Around’. If your mobile device has a GPS monitor, you’ll be able to search out WeChat users who live in your area. In my case, I found users within 900 meters of my home. To me, that’s kind of like standing on your porch and shouting, “Is there anybody out there?” Of course, the local users are all Chinese, except for me that is. Most early adopters of WeChat are overwhelmingly Chinese but, theoretically, that will change.

Once you find a WeChat user nearby, you can simply say, “Hi”. You can also tune the Look Around feature to show only males, only females or both. Personally, I think this feature is pretty cool but I can also see how it might seem creepy to some of you. If it does, you can easily delete the Look Around plug-in. It is part of the default set of plug-ins and is easily removed.

2. Instead of looking around for other WeChat users, you can shake your way to new relationships using the Shake plug-in. Choose the option from the screen and simply give your mobile phone a shake. WeChat looks around for other users who are shaking their devices at the same time and gives you the option to say hi to them. This plug-in is more proactive than the Look Around feature since you already know that the person shaking their phone is looking to make contact with someone. Say hi and see how it goes. You can always shake again if things turn sour. Remember, again, that virtually every user you contact will be Chinese. If you know anything about China and the Chinese people, you will know that almost everyone wants to learn English but many Chinese already have a rudimentary knowledge of it.  Many Chinese speak and write better English than some of your friends and neighbors, too.

TIP: If you meet someone you like and the English thing isn’t getting you anywhere, you can download QQ International. We’ll do another post on it but, for now, we’ll simply say that you can chat with someone who only knows Chinese even if you only know English. There is a wonderful translation app built into the International version which has opened up the world to China and, of course, China to the world.

3. The last way to meet new friends is to simply cast a bottle out into the ocean. Of course, this is a virtual bottle but it works the same way as a real bottle with a message in it. Type in your note or use a voice message and then toss your bottle into the ocean of WeChat users. WeChat will notify you when someone replies. Just now, I tossed a bottle out and almost instantly got three replies. One was a female exchange student in Denmark, another was a man who left me a voice message and the third was also a guy who just said, ‘Hello”. In the span of five minutes, I’ve got three new people to share things with. Cool!

WeChat isn’t for everyone. At this point, you have to have a keen interest in China and the Chinese people. You also have to be patient and be able to understand that not everyone in the world speaks perfect English. Once you’re over those hurdles, WeChat is loads of fun. Additionally, if you wait a year or so, WeChat will be flooded with millions of other users. At this point, it supports Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Portuguese, plus English and Chinese. (If you know social networking, you’ll see the importance of having WeChat available in Portuguese. Orkut, the Google version of Facebook, is extremely popular in Brazil.)

Questions, comments, links are all welcome. Thanks for reading!

    1. You can either add the person back and then block them or wait until they contact you and then block them. There has to be some contact between you for you to be able to access their profile. When you block a person, there is a record of that blocking. This allows you to unblock them, should you ever feel like doing so. When you delete someone, there is no record. Better to block, not delete. Good luck!

      1. It depends on when you shake. Remember that WeChat started in China, it’s run by the QQ people and QQ is the largest (by far) chat program in the world. In China it is known as Weixin. Depending on where you are, you might be shaking at the same time as 50 million Chinese users. Yes, that’s an exaggeration but you get the point. Regardless, why not chat with people from China? You just might find them very interesting. Change the time you shake if you don’t want to meet certain groups of people but maybe change your point of view and open up your world a bit. It’s a big world!

        1. I also have the same problem.. Keep founding chinese people.. What make me more mad is the distance are like illogical.. Im Malaysian, and how am i in range 12 – 20 km to chinese people? Its more like bug or spyware.. Can you fix it?

          1. No, we have no control over WeChat, we just try to help people use it. We’re in Canada and we have hundreds of Chinese living close to us. They show up in People Nearby and, sometimes, in Shake. We know many Chinese in Malaysia, too. Are you saying that you live in an area where you are POSITIVE there are NO Chinese? Seriously? WeChat started as Weixin in China. There are Chinese in every corner of the world. Doesn’t it make sense that more Chinese would be using WeChat than any other group of people? If that is disturbing, we suggest you use another app. There are quite a few out there although none are as much fun as WeChat.

          2. What i mean from Chinese people, does not on the Chinese people on my country.. What i mean is the real Chinese people like in Macao, Sichuan and others.. Are those place are 10 – 20 km from Malaysia? I know, user can still lie about their place.. But I even try shake my brother phone at the same time with my phone.. And for your information, my profile did not appears on his shake menu.. The problem is, when i shake, its keep founding that same kind of people and its keep looping after 10 – 15 people of that kind of people.. That what I bothering right now.. And, for your information, it is not the Chinese people I feel disturbing.. Its the problem make me disturbing.. I also got Chinese friends..

          3. If you and your brother use Shake at the same time and you both get the same people, then it’s working properly. If you have Malaysia as your home on WeChat, then you visit Japan, you will still show up on Shake as from Malaysia. The people you are connecting with could be visiting Malaysia, going to school there, etc. The point we are trying to make is that, unless you actually chat with the people you meet, how do you know where they are? Try it. Ask some of the people on Shake. Do it nicely, of course. Say something like “I’m trying to check my GPS settings. Are you really in Malaysia?” Try that a few times and maybe you will see that the people you see on Shake are really very close to you. Additionally, if your family is from wherever, let’s say Singapore, you might list Singapore as your home, even if you are in Africa. That way you would attract people who are also from Singapore. Do you see what we mean?
We’re not sure if people who are on your contact list actually show up on Shake. Is your brother on your contact list? Delete each other and shake at the same time, then see who shows up. Try it a couple of times.
Lastly, make sure your GPS is working correctly. We assume it is but check anyway. For us, Shake works perfectly. Depending on the time of day, we might meet people in Europe, China, the Philippines or Malaysia. etc. We’ve asked some of our friends in China about this so hopefully, we’ll get some answers from them.

          4. Correction.

My brother profile did not appear on my shake menu.. Its keep founding that kind of people..

          5. Hey Im a-are from Malaysia…I got the same problem like Amirul..After I shake my phone, I keep on met chinese from China and the location show they quit near with me…is it problem with my GPS? becoz when im using “People nearby features” all the people are the right close to me..only problem at “Shake features” could u giv me the reason y its happened??

          6. We’re not sure what’s happening here. We’re in Toronto and there are huge numbers of Chinese in the city. When we Shake, however, we get people from all over the world, depending on the time of day when we actually use the feature. When we use People Nearby, we get Chinese users exclusively, many of whom are very close to us. All we can suggest is to move from one location to another. Just now, for instance, we got one set of results in the office and a completely different, but more useful, set of results outside. Even though Shake doesn’t seem to use the GPS system, the results were totally different. WeChat is free, have fun with it and don’t worry if it doesn’t work perfectly. Have fun and don’t take it too seriously, that’s what we’d suggest.

      2. I am facing the same problem…shows only chinese people after shaking…to fix this all possible troubleshooting. Uninstall/install the app, factory reset of my phone, tried shaking at different time in a day…almost everything. I belong to india. This feature was working fine earlier

          1. Sorry, I cannot find any such comment with SOLVED at start….can you post here please…Thanks!

          2. * SOLVED *- Change your Nickname/display name and fully exit/close WeChat … Not your login/user ID/WeChat ID … I used Chinese, English & some symbols in mine for nearly 3 years which maybe is not acceptable anymore … if anybody needs more help with this, ask me on WeChat pls, ID davidflannery … Happy Shaking !

      3. i also have this problem.in my shake only getting chinese friends.it shows as 5-15 km.but i am living in india.anybudy sujjest me the solution…

  1. Hey, if I delete someone that I added from shake, can they still see my moments and able to send me messages? Do I disappear from their contact list when I delete them?

    1. Yes, they can still see your Moments. Why did you delete them? Why not block them? If they are simply deleted, it would seem that they can still send messages. On QQ, the basis, more or less, for WeChat, when you delete someone, you are still on their list. If you can remember the name of the person, block them. If you don’t remember their name, wait till they send a message and then block them. Problem solved!

  2. hi,
i have been using wechat since last 2/3 weeks, made few friends thru look around..one person in particular is posting their own complete nude pictures!! its disgusting and i think immediate action should be taken to stop this kind of pathetic and pornographic activity..please help!!

    1. Why not just delete that friend? What’s disgusting to you may not be disgusting to someone else, right? Just delete the friend and that takes care of it. Or, don’t use WeChat. There is a warning which you see before you sign-up for WeChat that warns you about adult content. It’s a big world out there, everyone is different. It would be a lot smaller world if everything that one person thought is ‘pathetic and pornographic’ was banned. We live by the motto, “Chacun a son gout”, French for ‘to each, their own”.

  3. Hello. While using wechat shake the only people that show up on it are either Chinese or sometimes Thai. Most of them do not know English so it is tough communicating with them, which loses the point of making new friends. My questions are
1)Why am I not able to see people from any other nationalities on shake?
2)Is there an option to filter out people who do not converse in english on shake?

    1. WeChat (Weixin in China) was created by QQ International, makers of the most popular chat app in the world. They are, of course, in China. WeChat is new and, while it is gaining in popularity, it is not as popular in the West as it is in the East. You meet the people that are using WeChat and they happen to be in China or Thailand, both very friendly countries. No, there is no option to converse with only English speaking people. Better to switch to Yahoo Messenger or Line. It is sometimes tough to communicate but, believe us, it’s worth expanding your horizons. Besides, most Chinese and some Thai speak some English.

  4. hi..
currently im using wechat on bluestacks without syncing cos i dont own any kind of smartphone.
is that the reason why i cant use the ‘look around’ function?

    1. Unless you have a GPS locator, Look Around won’t work. Your PC or Mac may know where you are because of your IP address so things like Location on Google might work but Look Around won’t. It has to have a GPS location to identify where you are, more or less exactly, in order to work. We get hits that are within 100 meters, sometimes less, so it’s quite specific. You can use an iPod Touch for WeChat too, don’t forget. It will work anywhere there is wifi and, while it’s not as portable as a smartphone, it works well. If you do get a smartphone, make sure it’s got enough internal memory, specially if it’s an Android. Don’t settle for anything less than a gigabyte, four more more is much better. You can always put apps on your SD card but most Google apps hog the internal memory and you can’t add new ones. Just so you know

  5. If I unblock someone, would they receive a notification or something showing that they are no longer blocked?

      1. So would there be any way to view the messages send by the individual while they were on the blocked list?
When they are unblocked, they just won’t receive the send but rejected message?

Thanks for the great article and help!

        1. No, the blocking took care of that. They will only receive the messages sent after they were unblocked. It’s all current, no messages are stored anywhere, at least not by WeChat. You’re most welcome! Thanks for the kind words.

  6. Hi, recently i have deleted friend from shake & how do I recover him back if I only have his wechat name. Pls help

    1. If the person is not under Shake then Settings then People Found, you can’t, unless you have their full WEChat ID or phone number. If you just have the name they used, such as Ralph or Mary, it is impossible to find them. Sorry! Thanks for commenting!

  7. I once found a friend via shake.. later deleted her and also cleared my shake history..nw i cant find her anywhere .. is there anyway that i could retrieve her?…. thanks.

    1. No, there is no way to find her. Check your contacts, just in case. Run through them one by one, their Details will say ‘From Shake’. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting!

  8. I wanted to invite my facebook friends into my contacts of WeChat. When I go to facebook friends, it says, “you have no facebook friends yet”, then i press “refresh”, it says “loading”…. And then it never ends…. It takes eternity. Please tell me the detailed procedure about adding facebook friends, what to do and approximately how much time does each step takes. And my network is 3G. I wait for your response. Thank you!

    1. If WeChat has already told you that you have no friends who use the app, why hit refresh? You may have friends on Facebook who use WeChat but they haven’t linked their account to it. Neither would we. The less information you give Facebook, the more privacy you have. If you want to add a few friends from Facebook, as them what their WeChat ID is and add them. We will do a post on linking Facebook and WeChat, even though we don’t agree with it.

  9. My wechat is having problem when im using the look around features,it tell me that the wechat could locate my position even i had turn on the gps system. The shakes also not working eventhough it function well before.please help me.i had reinstall it so many times but still didnt work. 🙁

    1. It appears that the problem may be your phone, not WeChat. More specifically, your GPS doesn’t seem to be working. Find a friend who uses WeChat, stand beside him or her and run through Look Around and/or Shake. If their WeChat works, then the problem is the phone, not WeChat. By the way, your GPS has to be on for a while before you use it. It sometimes take time for it to get a signal that will tell WeChat where you are. You can’t simply turn on GPS and then use Look Around. It won’t work. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting!

  10. I deleted a contact and blocked her. After a period of time I added her back. The screen showed a message saying start chatting.
All messages were sent but no reply. Then I remember the contact is on block list. I unblocked her. Had she been getting the messages while on my block list? If not will she see the sent messages now that she is unblocked?

    1. She will get your messages but you won’t get hers as long as she is blocked. Unless she blocks you, your messages will go through.
      Thanks for commenting!

    1. You have to add them as a contact, then block them. There doesn’t seem to be a way to deactivate your WeChat account. Just stop using it. Disable everything, unlink everything, delete everything, block everyone and then change your password. Then logout. That should do it! Thanks for commenting!

  11. My wechat shake feature is not working.. it worked initially when i downloaded it first time. But then i uninstalled it due to some reason and when again downloaded it, its shake feature stopped working 🙁
    Please help..

    1. We can’t guess why it’s not working but we’d suggest deleting the app and reinstalling it. Make sure you reboot your device after you delete the app, maybe even a couple of times, then reinstall the app. Remove any cache that is left before you reinstall WeChat. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting!

  12. Whenever I message my friend, I receive the message that says “the message was successfully sent but rejected by the user” what does that mean? Am I blocked already?

        1. You might want to check with that person to see if they really did block you. If they did, there is nothing you can do except get them to unblock you. If they didn’t, yes, delete them and add them again. They might have to delete you too, right? Save their contact info, delete them and add them again. Maybe your friend blocked you accidentally. Good luck with this.
          Again, thanks for commenting!

  13. Hey

I am not getting my verification code….neither am I getting the verification call I tried it a hundred times please help me with this.

    1. There is a possibility that the code is blocked by your mobile company. We assume that the text comes from China, just a guess. Some carriers allow texts from China, some don’t. Have a friend with a different carrier register and see if they get the code. You can contact WeChat support, too. Good luck!

  14. iam using we chat since 3 weeks and this thing happened when i send greeting to unknown person while shake or look around the greeting couldnt be delivered for sure but if a unknow person sends me greetings i recieved them.. dont know why i cant send greetings to unknow person. please kindly help have i got blocked from we chat or what

    1. If every message you sent can’t be delivered then something is wrong with the installation. Delete the app and install it again. Alternatively, use a wifi connection instead of a 3G/4G connection. It might have something to do with your carrier, not necessarily WeChat. We don’t think that WeChat blocks you but they might if you send too many messages. They may think that you are spamming other users. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting!

    1. Depending on which platform you are using, there are translation apps that you can use. On the iPod/iPhone, for instance, there is a version of Google Translate available for free from the app store. Once you install it, you’ll be able to coy and paste sections of text, from Moments let’s say, and translate them easily. Now, if you’re chatting with someone, it is a pain in the butt to translate everything. For that you’re better to move to QQ International which will translate both ways. Your chat partner doesn’t have to use the International version since you can translate their words and your words very easily. This works even if your partner isn’t Chinese. There are settings for many languages in QQ International.
For copying, rest your finger on the text for a moment then select copy. Go to the main menu and choose Translator, choose the search option, hold your finger in the window for a moment then choose Paste, then hit Go. The translation comes up almost instantly. There is no inline translation as yet but WeChat knows about this problem and may be working on it. When you think about it, it would be pretty tough to do it inline (within the app) and would require a lot of storage space. If you have problems, let us know.
      Thanks for commmenting!

    1. It’s your connection, either wifi or your mobile signal. The other solution is that you don’t have enough RAM or enough storage for the cache. Clean your cache and make sure your SD card is not full. If all else fails, reboot your phone/mobile device. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting!

  15. If I mention a person (A) in my moments. …will my other contacts who aren’t friends with A be able to see who I mentioned?

    1. Yes. You can hide your Moments from as many contacts as you want but if you don’t, everyone who can see your Moments will be able to see who you mentioned. Thanks for commenting!

  16. I just installed wechat on my iPhone because the QQ app was only in Chinese (although QQ International is available in English on a PC). I like Wechat, especially the Shake feature, and I find people not just from China but even in my neighbourhood. How often do I need to shake my phone to remain in Shake mode and receive greetings? Every 10 seconds, every minute, once an hour? Thanks!

    1. As far as we know, Shake is a one time thing. Shake, get a greeting or not, shake again, same thing. We don’t think your shake lasts very long but if you discover that it goes, let us know. We think it’s instantaneous, however. Thanks for commenting!

      1. I enjoyed using WeChat English version. Today I just tried the Shake feature and found the icon appearing on the top right hand of my phone. It took me hours and I still can’t get rid of the Shake icon even after disabling the feature. Please help!

        1. When something like that happens, shut down your phone and start it again. Sometimes the RAM gets corrupted or the system hangs up on one thing. Reboot/restart your phone and we’re quite sure the icon will be gone. Barring that, simply delete WeChat and install it again. Good luck!
          Thanks for commenting!

    1. You can’t add someone unless they send you a message back to you. Shake, find someone, send a message then, if they reply, you can add them as a contact. You can’t just find people and add them, that’s not how it works. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting!

      1. I found someone with “shake”. Sent greeting. The person replied. But still, I dont know how to to add him to chat or how to send a request… can you please help?

        1. Go to Shake but don’t shake. Up at the top, on the right, are three dots. Press them. You will see Greetings. Press that and everyone who has answered your greeting will be there. Press Add Contact and you’re done! Thanks for commenting!

          1. Its not happening,as anybody replies after shake if i go to greetings button and only things come that is alias or cancel…no add option….in same there is no three dot…its a star(setting sign which leads you to greetings button and after that just alias or cancel thats it

          2. What platform are you using? We use an iPod and an Android phone and both are the same, just as we described. The interface is identical on each platform. The only time we get the option to use an alias or cancel is when we press ‘People Found’ then the name/profile then the three dots at the top right. When we choose Greetings, it is exactly as we described. Your platform may be different, we’re not sure. If you tell us which one you’re using, we’ll try to check it out.

  17. I have a problem i dont have drift bottle thing in social its only shake and the look thing. Im using an itouch 4. Huhu i dont have drift bottle 🙁

    1. We use an iPod Touch 4 for WeChat and we have the Drift Bottle feature. We just installed the new version of WeChat on one of our Android phones and it’s there as well. Go to your settings then features then to Drift Bottle to see if you have maybe disabled it. Otherwise, we can’t figure out what’s wrong. Is it available in your country? Check with a friend who uses WeChat to see if they have it. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting!

  18. I hav used the shake feature just to see what is it n I had received msgs from unknown ppl now I hav disabled that feature ..plz tell the person who had sent me a text would be able to see my profile pic n can download it or not ? M scared.

    1. That person can only see what you have made public. If you disable ‘find me by WeChat ID’ then that person can’t see you at all. Unless you had added them as a contact, they can only see 10 of your photos. If you don’t want people to see your face, use a picture of a cat or something and don’t put your own photo in your Moments. WeChat by its nature is a public application to meet people. Set your privacy to your own level of safety, OK? Go to Settings then Privacy and set everything to where you feel comfortable.

  21. hello wenever i use lookaround option i c ma frndz at d top..my frnd has gone to dubai can i see her nw in look around?

    1. You won’t find your friend unless you increase your search distance to include the distance from where you are to Dubai. There should be a way to hide your own friends from Look Around but there isn’t. Dubai is fairly restricted so Look Around may not be allowed there. They regularly block apps that they consider too ‘open’.
      Thanks for commenting!

  22. Why friend is having problems with his look around feature..when he presses it, it says there is no one around him using that feature..yes there are people here using wechat..

    1. Things like that are hard to diagnose. Does his GPS work for other apps? When he is beside you, does yours work and his doesn’t? Maybe his phone/device is not as sensitive as your device. Other than uninstalling the app and reinstalling it, we can’t suggest too much. His carrier’s signal may not be as powerful in the area where you are testing Look Around. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting!

    1. Go to your contact list, second from the left on the bottom row. Once you have your list of contacts showing, scroll down to the person you want to delete. Press on the person’s name to bring up their profile. Up on the top right, you will see three dots. Press them, then choose Delete to take them off your contact list. You can also Block them to stop them from finding you or bothering you again. Good luck!

  23. if i use shake feature too many times it does not show people from my country. if i dont use shake for around 6 hours then it works manually and shows people from my country. so is there any limit to use shake or is there some other problem.

    1. There are many things in play here. Things like time zones, signals and hundreds of different phones/mobile devices, etc. We’re in Canada and NEVER find anyone from North America. Lately it’s only Thailand that we get. There is no limit that we know of and we doubt that there are problems with the system. It’s hit and miss, right? It’s a unique and fun part of WeChat, more like a game than an actual way to find real friends. Use it for fun and we think you’ll enjoy it more. Nothing about WeChat is too serious, specially not Shake. Maybe you’d have more success with Message in a Bottle or Look Around. Good luck!
      Thanks for commenting!

  24. Hi. I am facing a problem while using wechat. The shake feature is working well but look around is nt working…it says that my location is not detectable. What could be the reason?

    1. The only time we get that is when the GPS isn’t working or can’t find a signal. Move outside or turn your phone/iPod off then on again. You need the satellite signal or 3G/4G, too. The GPS won’t work with wifi alone. Good luck. Let us know if it works after this.

    1. The only limit we can see if the size of the memory on your phone but that probably wouldn’t limit things at all. Most phones have gigs of storage these days. Thanks for commenting and thanks for your kind words! We do our best.

  25. i have difficulty to delete the users from shake list. How to delete because i dont want them appear in my list. Thanks

    1. Go to Shake but don’t shake. Up on the top right is an icon of a gear. Press it. Look for People Found and press that. You will see a list of people that you have found but have not added as contacts. Look for the word Clear and press that, then confirm it. Everyone will be gone. Let us know if that doesn’t work.

      1. Thank you very much Brian…i really appreciate your help. i have done it, now it solved my problem..thanks

  26. I used an N8 refresh. Symbain does not have many features what android version of we chat has.

My query is how accurate is look around? It shows me people who are in other cities as 1 km away or 800 m away!

    1. You have to remember that people travel, right? Depending on where you live, you may have tourists from all over the world. There is less of a chance to meet someone who lives close to you than someone who is travelling, we think. For us, it works perfectly. We some from our area, sometimes very close, while others seem to be from somewhere halfway around the world. The test would be to use Look Around in a crowded area. If it’s working correctly, you should find quite a few people very close to you. Alternatively, get a friend to stand close to you and check to see if you can see him/her on your search. The closest we’ve had is 400 m away which is entirely possible. Your phone may be at fault, too. Does the GPS work perfectly in other apps?

  27. hi just want to ask why my wechat is not working on my iPod touch 4 i tried to install and re-install it again but still the shaking and locator is not working..my iPod touch is updated with the latest version.i hope you can help me..thank you very much

    1. There are several reasons why those two functions might not be working. If you can send messages and they are received, then you know WeChat itself is working. The two features you mention are based on your GPS settings and your GPS availability. They also assume that your GPS is set to ‘on’ in your WeChat settings. First, go to Settings then Features then to Look Around and then Shake. Make sure they are both Enabled. Second, does your GPS work for other apps, things like Google Maps? If it does, then you know that you have to be able to send and receive data or wifi from where you are Shaking or Looking Around. If you are inside a mall or a building and you can’t find yourself on a Google Map, then you won’t be able to use the WeChat GPS features. You have to be near a window for your GPS to work, that’s the most important thing to remember. If you can’t get a proper GPS signal, you can’t use the features, even if you have enabled them. We hope this helps. Good luck!

  28. I have deleted this person from my wechat but i kinda regretted after that. have been searching on how to add that person back without typing the ID because i’ve forgotten the ID. what can i do?

    1. It’s probably not possible. Did that person every comment on one of your Moments? Maybe there is a record of the comment and a link to their profile. Check your chats to see if they are still in your list of chats, even if they are not on your contact list. Unfortunately, WeChat/Weixin isn’t like QQ in this area. With QQ it is easy to find contacts, even if they have been deleted. Did this person ever send you a message on QQ? It might still be in your QQ chat history. Good luck!

  29. Hello,

If the Wechat ID of someone in your contact is not visible does that mean the person had blocked me or that person’s account deactivated or something else? I can’t also see that person’s album/moments.

    Thanks

    1. That’s a good question, one for which we don’t have an answer. Anyone can hide their moments from you. That’s blacklisting but it doesn’t mean they have blocked you. We checked one of our contact lists and we found a few contacts that did not have a WeChat ID. Some we deleted, others we had chatted with. We’ll get back to you on this. OK?
      Thanks for commenting!

    2. According to several of our friends in China, this would mean that they have deleted you from their contact list. It makes sense but we’ll reply again if we get more info.

      1. When I sent a message to these people, some replied insisted they have not deleted me (may be true may be not, who knows?), some never replied at all and some I received a message something like ‘This person require’s friendship approval to chat. Please send a friend request’. That’s an obvious tellinng I’ve been deleted so I delete them as well lol.

Some of these friends are from Look Around / Shake and I have not seen them there either. Could this mean they have not been online or had deleted Wechat from their phones?

        Thanks

p/s: Sorry for the double/triple postings last time. I received an error message (wp error or something) when posting so I posted again and again lol

        1. We discovered that you set your own WeChat ID when you sign up. It’s not mandatory, at least not when you use your QQ number to get a WeChat account. The WeCHat ID is left open and, similar to other chat programs, you can make up your own. That would mean that anyone without a WeChat ID probably hasn’t bothered to set it up. If WeChat works for them and if their friends can find them using other means, then it seems that the actual ID is not needed.
It’s difficult to keep track of friends from Look Around or Shake. Depending on how you interacted with them, they may have simply blocked you or decided that WeChat is not for them. Alternatively, they may have opened a new account and changed their settings after learning from their previous experience. When WeChat is linked to a QQ account, it’s much easier to keep track of contacts.
We’re in the process of trying this out using a couple of WeChat profiles. We’ll do more on this topic soon. WeChat and Facebook are our most popular posts, it seems.
          Thanks again for commenting!

  30. Hello,

If the Wechat ID of someone on your contact/friend list is not visible is it because he/she has blocked me or his/her account deactivated or something else? Other frieds’ IDs are visible.

    Thanks

    1. We don’t think so. On QQ, the original Tencent chat program, deleting a contact does not remove you from their contact list. On QQ there is an option to delete yourself from their list but not on WeChat, at least as far as we can tell. Better to block the person or blacklist them. If you blacklist them, they cannot see any of your Moments. That might be the solution you’re looking for. Let us know if you need more help.

  31. hi I know its a silly question but still I have no idea about this so can u tell me if I accept sum1 unknown through shake then…can they see my contact no. or they r just added into my friends list so that we can easily chat. thanx in advance. FYI loved ur article..got to know some things.

      1. Further to our last reply, we’ve discovered that simply saying hello to someone that you meet on Shake results in a friend invitation being sent to them. We tried Shake this morning, basically to see what happened. Just now, we checked and discovered that the Shake contact had been sent a friend invitation. We could see their album and, we assume, they could see our albums. Maybe we should say ‘Moments’, since what we post in Moments become Albums. As a partial solution to your privacy question, there is a way to ‘blacklist’a user. Blacklist means that they are still on your list, you are still on theirs but they cannot see any of your moments. Go to your Contact list, press any user and then press the three dots on the upper right corner. Choose ‘Moments Options’ and select Add to Black List. The description is below that option. Doing this will offer you some privacy. Once you get to know the person, you can take them off the Black List or Block them completely. Lastly, any contact you meet in Shake or any of the other Social options (Drift Bottle and Look Around) are identified on your contact list. Press any name and you’ll see if they came from one of the three Social options. Hope this helps you!

  32. when you shake it and the people that appear are they aactually within 100m of you?and how can i hide my location/region

    1. You can do a few things but the one that makes sense is to go to Settings (bottom right) then Features then to Look Around and/or Shake. Touch the name of the feature you want to change and then press Disable. Alternatively, you could turn off your GPS but turning off the feature makes more send. You cannot use the feature AND hide your location, that’s the point of it. Are you in China? You must be. When we shake our devices we only get people in China or Thailand, never in Canada.

  33. I’m just wondering, if you block someone on Wechat, is there a possiblity of them finding out you blocked them?

    1. They won’t actually know you blocked them but they won’t be able to see your albums plus any messages they send to you will get the response “message was received but rejected”, which kind of gives it away. You will still show up on their list but they would only be able to see your cover photo, nothing else. So this is a yes and no answer. We hope this helps.

  34. hello i need to know if there is a way to find my girlfriend contact because i bloked her but i dint want to do it, so how can i do to find her again if i bloked her?

    1. From any screen, press on the Settings gear on the bottom right. Choose Privacy then choose Blocked List. Find your girlfriend on the list and press her name to get to her profile. Then press the three dots on the top right of the screen and choose Unblock. That will get her back on your list. Good luck!

  35. hi, may i know is there any possible way of finding the exact contact location? Fyi, my ex blocked me and i really need to find her..

    1. No. That is very likely illegal. The police would consider that ‘stalking’. If your ex blocked you, they did it for a reason. Time to move on and forget about her. Her message is quite clear, isn’t it?

    1. There is no way to change the settings for Weixin yet. This may come soon. Right now, all you can do is use the ‘Look Around’ feature. Everything depends on how many people use Weixin/WeChat in your city or country. Millions of Chinese in China use Weixin but maybe not many people in Malaysia.
      Thanks for commenting!

    1. Quite simply, you can’t. The reason that you are getting males only is most likely because more males than females are using shake. We’ve experimented and find the ratio about the same, male to female. The only part of WeChat that you can select your male/female option is in the Look Around feature.

  36. I tried using shake on wechat on my new iPod but it doesn’t work on my old iPod it worked perfectly fine location is on but I don’t know what’s wrong it’s says something about reload. Could you please help me with this?

    1. You could try deleting the app and then re-installing it. You have to remember that the iPod has to have access to a GPS locator, as opposed to a mobile phone which uses the mobile towers for GPS most of the time. If you’re inside an apartment or house and not near a window, the iPod has some problems. Our ‘Shake’ still works almost all of the time but not if the user is deep in the office or underground, like in a basement. Finally, we’re using the iPod 4th Generation, which we assume that you are as well. We’d suggest trying it near a window or on a balcony, something like that. You need WiFi, of course, but you also need GPS access. Let us know how it turns out, OK?

  37. Wechat does not react to shaking, does bot show me background image at all, just the phone cartoon and it won’t shake, am I missing anything? Please send tips.

    1. We just tried it on an iPod Touch and it works fine. WeChat just upgraded itself so check to see if there is an upgrade available for your system. Which platform are you using? Android? The shake feature also depends on the time of day. If you are in Mexico, let’s say, everyone else is sleeping, there may not be anyone shaking at that time but you should still get the rose icon in between the two halves of the shaking phone icon. Additionally, shake may not be as popular as some of the other features of WeChat. Update your program and check it again. Let us know if it still doesn’t work and we’ll contact WeChat for you.

    1. Many free apps like WeChat have built-in limits on the frequency of the messages you can send. Anything around 10 or 15 messages would seem like spam to most, if not all, apps such as WeChat. Twitter, Facebook, QQ, MSN and Yahoo all have these internal limits to the number of messages you can send in a given amount of time. Why? Simply to stop spamming. The limits are set so that most users can work quite well within them. Anyone who finds the limits too low can, of course, move to another app. I hope this answers your question. If you can find any other app that doesn’t have a limit to the number of broadcasts you can send in a given amount of time, let me know. I’ll write about here.

        1. It’s not a silly question at all, don’t worry. You can chat with someone from Shake but they will only be able to see your profile photo. Once you add them as a contact, they will be able to see your full profile. Shake isn’t nearly as weird as Look Around. With Look Around, anyone can see ten photos in your photo album. We aren’t as concerned with Shake as much as we are with Look Around. Shake takes active participation. Look Around is a bit sneaky since anyone can use it to see who is close to them. If you’re concerned about privacy, we’d suggest turning Look Around off. As far as Shake goes, it’s a fun way to meet people because you know that at the same point in time, you’re both looking to contact someone. We hope we answered your question.
