Facebook – How to delete places

Facebook Places shows where you’ve been in the world, right? Well, no, it doesn’t. Facebook Places shows your friends both the places you’ve been AND the places where your friends have been. How’s that? Let’s say you head to Timbuktu and take a photo of your hotel room. Just for fun, you tag your friend Raoul in that photo. Guess what? The next time Raoul checks his Places map, it will show that he’s been in Timbuktu. Fun huh?

If your Places map shows places that you’ve never been in your life, here’s how to get rid of them. Some of you may want to leave them, which is fine, but for the others, here’s how you do it.

1. Head to your Places.

Photo of Facebook Places 1
Click on More, then Places, depending on how you have your Timeline set up.

2. Here’s one of our maps:

Photo of Facebook Places 2
Two times in Malaysia? Really?

3. Looks like there are a couple of photos from Malaysia that we need to untag. Click on the place in question, something like this comes up:

Photo of Facebook Places 3
Two photos pop up once you click the number 2.

4. Two photos, both with tags. You don’t have to navigate all the way to the photo, just click on the one that you want to untag yourself from (is that good English or what?) Once the photo pops up, click on the word Options:

Photo of Facebook Places 4
Click Options then Report/Remove Tag.

5. You don’t want to report the photo, you just want to untag yourself. Here’s how that looks:

Photo of Facebook Places 5
Choose ‘I want to untag myself’ then click Remove Tag.

6. Done! Let’s check the map again to see if it worker. Don’t forget to refresh the page before you check:

Photo of Facebook Places 6
And then there was one.

7. This method will remove the places where you’ve been tagged by your friends. If you have added Location to some of your photos or for whole photo albums, those will all show on your map. If you’ve told Facebook that you’ve worked at a brand name company, such as Maximum PC for us, that will show also. You’ll have to remove the Location from your photos and/or delete the work or school history to get rid of those places. Once you know where these ‘places’ come from, you’ll find it much easier to erase them. Good luck! Let us know if you have problems.

The Ultimate Facebook Likes Guide – as of April 23, 2013

It seems that Facebook changes their own rules every week. They probably don’t change every week but in the last few months, many of our previous posts on Facebook likes have been made obsolete. Here we go with our latest how-to on this topic. If you’re lost your ‘Likes’, we’ll get them back. If you want to hide them from everyone but yourself, we’ll show you how. Grab a coffee, open your own Facebook profile and let’s get started.

How to Hide (or un-Hide) Your Likes on Facebook

1. Everything you do is done from your Timeline so start there. You will notice that the various boxes (photos, friends, likes, etc.) have been replaced by the words Timeline, About, Friends, Photos and, finally, More. Clicking on More brings down a menu, as seen here:

Photo of Facebook Likes 1
No likes here!

2. We’ve hidden our Likes from this menu. How do we get them back? Click on the words Update Info:

Photo of Facebook Likes 2
Update Info is where we start.

3. On the right side of the page that comes up, click on the pen/pencil icon on the far right. When the menu pops down, choose Edit Sections:

Photo of Facebook Likes 3
Click Edit Sections to bring up a new menu, one we haven’t seen before.

4. Here’s the new menu:

Photo of Facebook Likes 4
Here’s where you choose which topics show up on your Timeline when a friend clicks the word ‘More’.

Simply decide which sections of your favorites you want to show to your friends. There are three sections that you can’t hide, About, Friends and Photos, but you can certainly hide parts of each ‘section’ listed on that list. What can’t you hide? You can’t hide your Mutual Friends from anyone. Bummer, huh? Yes, you can hide your Friend list but you can’t hide Mutual friends. Keep that in mind, folks.

5. Notice that this time we’ve selected ‘Likes’. Click Save and then go back to your Timeline and click the word More.

Photo of Facebook Likes 6
What’s this? The ‘Likes’ are back? Cool!

Guess what? Our Likes are shown in the drop-down list. Pat yourself on the back! You’ve completed your assignment. This has been a short and simple way to get the Likes ‘box’ back. You’re right, it’s not a box but people still use that term to describe it so we will too. Obviously, perform the opposite steps if you want to hide your list of likes. What do you see when you actually click on the word ‘Likes’ on that menu? Here’s what we see:

Photo of Facebook Likes 7
Here they are, broken down into groups. These groups may vary from person to person.

Now you’re asking, “Who can see what?” right? Time to hover. Move your mouse (cursor) to the right of the words under each ‘Like’. You’ll see an icon that reflects your privacy settings for each of the ‘Likes’ shown.

Photo of Facebook Likes 8
Click on the icon if you want to change the privacy settings for each ‘Like’.

OK folks, that’s it for today. We’ve got the Likes box back or we’ve hidden it, it’s up to you. Next, let’s take a look at some privacy settings in your Likes area.

Questions, comments, oatmeal cookies…we love them all. Let us know what you can or can’t do and we’ll see what solutions we can come up with. Follow us on Facebook (just click Like) and keep up with all of our updates, posts and interesting stuff. Here’s the link: Computers Made Simple on Facebook

Facebook – Use Your Head!

Mothers used to say, “Use your head” whenever we did something stupid. Today we’re saying the same thing to you. Use your head when clicking and sharing things on Facebook. Here’s an example:

Photo of Bill Gates
Don’t even think of clicking anywhere on this photo or link when you see it on Facebook.

This one came up this morning but it’s quite old from what we know. We’ve left the sharer’s name on this because this particular person has started dozens of these idiotic shares. It’s very obvious that the paper has been photoshopped but, more than that. how could anyone possibly send you money for sharing a photo on Facebook? Why would anyone have their Paypal account linked to their Facebook account? Use your head! Unless you are a cretin or drunk, you should be able to see through these things.

Here’s another:

Photo of Facebook scam
There is no way anyone can find out who has looked at their profile.

This is actually a malicious link. If you happen to click on it, you’ll be taken out of the comparative safety of Facebook to a site that, very likely, will ask for your Facebook sign-in information. You know what happens then, right? Your precious Facebook account will be hijacked. Again, we have left the person’s name on this photo because of the vast number of these malicious/misleading/ridiculous posts that he or she has created and shared.

Yet another:

Photo of Lucky Coin
How can clicking on a photo bring you luck? How can anything bring you luck?

Does this remind you of anything? Maybe a chain letter? Did you know that forwarding a chain letter is illegal in most countries? Think about it. This is no different. If you share or click like on something such as this, you’re simply adding to the noise that’s on Facebook every day.

Edit: Here is another photo that you should not interact with:

Photo of cow and snake.
Looks like there are 81,000 sick people and almost a million stupid ones. There is no magic, none at all.

Don’t reward these idiots by clicking or by typing in a word (that won’t work anyway) on these posts.

Lastly, don’t help Facebook use you to tune their demographics. More and more, Facebook shares unwanted ads and posts with you. Whatever you do, don’t share these ad and/or posts with your friends. Facebook is using you as bait to fish for information on your friends. Be smart. Facebook isn’t paying you so don’t let them use you to make money.

A Dangerous Facebook App

There are thousands of Facebook games and apps, most of them are fun, entertaining and relatively safe. Some aren’t. Here is an anatomy of one Facebook app that we feel is dangerous and sneaky. Use the details in this post to judge other Facebook apps. Hopefully, you’ll be a smarter Facebook user after this.

Here’s the scenario. You get a request from one of your friends:

Photo of App Request
Seems like a simple request, one of many you probably get each week.

This request looks innocuous enough, right? Just wait till you accept. Let’s see what happens then.

Photo of App Invitation 2
Oh great! You’ll never forget another birthday. Hmmmm.

The nastiness begins as soon as you click ‘Go to App’. The screen will flash then, all of a sudden, you’re not in Kansas (Facebook) anymore.

Photo of App Invitation 3
Are you still on Facebook? What’s with all the ads?

You were on Facebook, right? Suddenly, you’re not. Every other app leaves the Facebook name up at the top. This tricky app doesn’t. Lots of ads but no way to get back to Facebook. When you see this, you should stop immediately. An app that takes you away from the relative security of Facebook is trying to trick you. Watch out for this.

Read the page carefully. This app will add your friend’s birthdays, see the check mark beside number 1? It will also send you birthday reminders, see check number 2. Lastly, it will kindly accept requests on your behalf, check number 3. Conveniently, they’re already checked for you. (That was sarcasm, in case you missed it) What do you do now?  Run!

If you click the word Continue, here’s what you get:

Photo of App Invitation 4
We’ve blacked out the names for privacy.

Depending on the number of friends you have, you will get a page like this for every 49 names on your list. If you choose to Cancel this prompt, another 49 names pop up. But wait! What is that check mark down at the bottom? This one:

Photo of Game Invitation 5
If you don’t uncheck the box, this app will send out requests any time it wants to.

Do you see how devious all of this is? Do you see how rapidly you’d become very unpopular on Facebook?

We think that you’ve got the general idea here. This is a pretty sick app, not in a good way. When you come across something like this, warn your friends and immediately delete it from your app list. We’ll show you how to do that next time.

Hide Your Game Updates on Facebook

If you’re worried about spamming your friends with game updates on Facebok, here’s how to hide them:

1. You can do this in at least two places. The easiest way to hide ALL of your game updates is to head to your Timeline first. Click on your name, top right side of any Facebook page. Once your Timeline opens, look for the words Activity Log.

Photo of Hide 1
From your Timeline, click on the words Activity Log.

2. When your Activity Log opens, all of your activities are shown.

Photo of Hide 2
All of your activities are shown here.

3. While you could scroll down and edit each post, we’re here to hide only your game updates. On the left of your screen, look for the list of activities. Normally, Games will be hidden so look for the word ‘More’ and click it:

Photo of Hide 3
Look for the word More and click it.

4. Once the menu spreads down, look for the word Games. Click on it.

Photo of Hide 4
Click on Games. All updates from all games that you play will show up on the right.

5. On the right side, click on the icon that is second from the right. If could be an icon of a globe, two heads in silhouette or maybe a padlock. Here are your choices:

Photo of Hide 5
Choose who sees each game’s updates. In this case, only the Facebook user can see this game’s updates.

6. Once you have set each game’s updates to Only Me, and that is the setting that we recommend,   the icon on the far right will be greyed out. Why? Because ALL updates will now be hidden. Do your friends a favor by making sure that each game you play will not spam their newsfeed.
