Check Facebook Privacy Settings

Facebook recently changed the way that you can check who can see what you’re posted or been tagged in. Here’s a run-down of how you can quickly check your settings.

1. Start by clicking on the icon that looks like a padlock, up on the right of any Facebook page.

2. On the menu that pops down, click on ‘Who can see my stuff’.

Click on ‘Use Activity Log’.

4. On the page that opens, everything that is possible to do on Facebook is on the left, everything that you can control is on the right.

Sort out your different activities from this single page.

5. The first time you access these areas, Facebook will walk you through the changes. Basically, this is a complete list of everything that you’ve done on Facebook since time began…well, since  you joined Facebook anyway. Depending on how busy you’ve been, the different pages may take a long time to load. Choose an activity on the left side, then look on the right side to see who can see it. You can even choose activities that are set to ‘only me’.

The default setting doesn’t include ‘Only Me’ activity but you can set it to include it.

6. On this page, you can hide activity from your own Timeline. Remember that any post’s privacy settings are controlled by the original poster’s settings. You control your own posts, of course, but if you are tagged by someone else, you have the option of removing that activity from your timeline or removing the tag completely.

You can hide posts that you’re been tagged in.

7. Once you get used to finding and using this page, we think you’ll appreciate its power. Each post, each activity has it’s own settings. You can hide things from your Timeline, limit the audience for things you post or share, all kinds of things. Don’t forget that you can set an audience for a post/comment/photo when you do it but you can always backtrack and change the settings here.

Play around with this page. If you find something cool, let us know. We think you’ll feel a bit better about controlling your own privacy now.

Thanks for reading!

  1. When on my activity log it come up searched for “”
Who is “” ? This is annoying me to hell now. Helppp

    1. Believe it or not, we looked at our search history and found the same thing. Ours was on April 6th, by the way. Two things here. You can hide your search history, maybe you didn’t know that. Additionally, if you simply type something in the search slot, even without pressing enter, that ‘search’ will show up on the history. If you need help hiding your history, let us know. The “” is meaningless, it seems. We’ve been typing different things in the search slot just to see if we can duplicate the “” but nothing has shown up so far.

  2. Why today, can I not see all the people I have previously searched in my activity log, I have clicked on only me and it use to record my searches not anymore. I have asked a friend to look at hers and its the same for her?? Do you know if anybody else has this problem, this is annoying

    1. Hi Ange. We’ve found the search history. It’s back! Click on ‘Activity Log’ then choose ‘More’ on the left column. Down at the bottom is the word ‘Search’. Only you can see the history and, just in case someone else has access to your profile, you can remove certain searches or all of them by clicking on the far right icon. Hope this helps!

  3. When I go into my activity log, I use to see all the names I have previously searched by clicking on only me. This has been useful a couple of times and today I am trying to find a friend who has got married and a month ago I remember searching for her. It shows all my likes and comments, but it does not show who I search for now!! Does anybody else have the same problem, this has only occurred since today

    1. OK, thanks. We understand it now. It seems that the search history is missing completely from Facebook. It’s not just your problem, it looks like Facebook removed that feature. At the time when Graph Search was started, many people didn’t want a history of their searches, probably because they were worried that someone else would see their searches. Perhaps that’s why it was removed. Everyone has the same problem, unfortunately.
Thanks for explaining your question again. Sorry we had to give you some bad news.

  4. Include only me activity,is not working now! Why? I am trying to find a married friend From school, i search for last month

    1. We aren’t sure what you mean with your question. The ‘only me’ choice is working for us. When you check your activity log, choosing the ‘only me’ selection will show everything you’ve done, including the things that no one else can see but you. We can’t help you with your search, sorry. You’d have to know your friend’s married name, if that friend is female, right?
Thanks for commenting. If you can explain your problem in more detail, we will try to help.
